This Afghan wool rug, woven in the Moroccan scatter tradition, measures three by five feet and is hand-knotted with a cotton foundation. When touched, its pile is high and shaggy, thick tufts that spring back, not cut perfectly even, so your hands rise and fall in a soft uneven rhythm. The knotting is coarse and tribal, fewer than one hundred per square inch, leaving the surface loose but sturdy, with a rustic handwoven character.
The ground color is beige, covering about seventy percent of the rug. It feels calm and sandy, like sun-warmed stone, a neutral canvas beneath the brighter marks. Across this beige field, scattered irregular colors appear, each isolated and abrupt. Red is the most striking, about ten percent, bold and fiery against the soft ground. Black follows, about eight percent, dense and weighty like ink blots. Pink comes in softer tones, about five percent, gentle and blushing, while sky blue patches, another five percent, float coolly like fragments of air. Finally, faint violet, about two percent, hides at the edges, subtle and almost missed until closely examined. The transitions between these colors and the beige are sharp — no blending, each mark stands separate, abrupt, and confident.
There is no medallion, no border, no framing. Your hands move directly to the rug’s edge where the wool stops in a neat, serged finish. There is no fringe, the corners are plain, and the field remains free. The scatter design is asymmetrical and simple: marks appear without order, as though they were placed by chance, like confetti landing where it may. The motifs themselves are irregular dots and blots, geometric only in their raw simplicity.
Walking barefoot, the surface feels cushioned, springy, warm and insulating. The wool is dense and plush underfoot, yet uneven, each step encountering a slightly different height. Turning the rug over, the back reveals the coarse knot structure, simple and tribal, evidence of its handmade origin.
In spirit, the rug feels joyful and spontaneous. It does not repeat, it does not align, it does not obey symmetry. Instead it carries playfulness — beige as a calm ground, with bursts of red, black, pink, blue, and violet energizing it like scattered celebration. Its small size makes it intimate, perfect as an accent in a room, a woolen piece of art that brings warmth and cheer, a captured moment of color and chance woven into fabric.
