This rug, hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Moroccan scatter tradition, measures just over three feet by five feet and is woven entirely in wool. Its surface is thick, with a high pile that springs beneath the hand, the tufts uneven so your fingers rise and dip as they move across. Beneath the wool is a cotton foundation, firm and steady, though it remains hidden under the plush surface. The knotting is coarse, fewer than one hundred knots per square inch, giving the rug a rustic and tribal texture.
The field is a soft beige, covering about seventy percent of the rug, warm like sunlit sand. Onto this ground the weaver has scattered irregular marks of color. Red is the boldest, about ten percent, vivid and strong, like sparks across the wool. Black follows, smaller but weighty, eight percent, grounding the composition. Then come softer tones: pink patches, gentle and blushing at five percent; pale blue dabs, airy and cool at another five percent; and faint violet, barely two percent, hiding at the edges like whispers in the weave. Each color stands apart, abrupt against the beige, never blending, each its own island in wool.
There is no medallion, no border. Your hands travel freely to the edge, where the rug ends in neat serged finishing with no fringe. The corners are plain, unembellished. The scatter pattern is asymmetrical and simple, each blot of color irregular, as though painted freely by hand. The wool feels dense and cushioned underfoot, warm and insulating, springy with each step. On the back, the knot grid feels coarse and tribal, consistent but loose, proof of its rustic origin.
In presence, the rug is playful and contemporary. It does not follow symmetry or classical order; instead, it celebrates spontaneity. Beige calms the eye while the scattered red, black, pink, blue, and violet excite it. In a room, it acts as a bright accent, small in size but lively in character, a celebration of color across a sandy woolen field, handwoven yet free-spirited.
