An elaborate system of multiple borders frames the entire composition, creating a rich and contained visual experience. The main border is wide and rendered in a contrasting Ivory color, which makes the central red field appear even more powerful. This ivory border is filled with a continuous, repeating pattern of stylized geometric rosettes or stars, connected by an angular vine, woven in brick red, deep aubergine, and gold. This main border is flanked by several narrower guard borders. Some are simple stripes, while others contain their own repeating geometric motifs, adding layers of complexity and visual interest.
The internal character and very soul of this rug are tied to its function in Islamic prayer. The entire design is a symbolic representation of a prayer niche in a mosque. When in use, the rug is laid on the floor so that the arch of the mihrab points towards the holy city of Mecca.
