Imagine a small, rectangular rug laid out before you. If you were to touch it, you would immediately notice its incredible weight and stiffness for its size. The surface is not soft and fluffy. Instead, the wool pile is very short and phenomenally dense, feeling crisp, firm, and slightly grainy under your fingertips, like a tightly woven, heavy fabric. This structure is famously durable, earning these rugs the nickname “the Iron Rug of Persia.”
Let’s build a picture of the design, starting with the main color areas. The rug is composed of two main parts: a large central rectangle and a thick frame around it. The large central area is a very dark, deep Navy Blue, like a night sky. The thick frame surrounding this is a vibrant, contrasting Crimson Red.
Now, let’s focus on the pattern within the large, dark blue center. This area is completely covered with a single, small, repeating figure. To picture one of these figures, imagine a tiny flower, about the size of a coin, with Crimson Red and White petals. Around this tiny flower, picture a diamond shape, like a tilted square, drawn with a line of bright Sky Blue. This diamond is just large enough to frame the flower. From each of the four points of this blue diamond, a single, curved leaf gracefully arcs outwards. Each leaf is shaped like a comma or a paisley teardrop. The two leaves on the top and bottom are Crimson Red, while the two leaves on the left and right are a bright Spring Green. Now, imagine this entire figure—the central flower, its blue diamond frame, and the four surrounding leaves—repeated over and over again, side-by-side and top-to-bottom, packed tightly together until they completely fill the entire dark blue center of the rug. This creates a very busy, formal, and rhythmic surface where your eye can move from one repeating element to the next.
Finally, let’s explore the thick, Crimson Red frame around the rug. This frame is actually made of several smaller stripes running parallel to each other. The widest, central stripe of the frame is the Crimson Red one. Woven onto this red stripe is a repeating pattern of larger, more complex flowers. These flowers are shaped like a flattened circle and are woven in Navy Blue, Sky Blue, Green, and White. They are all connected to each other by a thick, winding stem. On either side of this main red stripe is a much narrower stripe with a White background. A simple, wavy line, like a gentle wave or a snake, wiggles its way down the middle of each of these white stripes, using alternating red and blue colors. These stripes all work together to create a rich and decorative frame that securely contains the intricate pattern of the rug’s center.
