Short cotton fringe breaks like a pale brush at the top edge, then the hand meets an even, low nap of wool laid across a tall rectangle. The first sight is a quiet, saturated brown field—deep and steady—out of which a single, stepped diamond medallion rises. Its architecture is drawn in firm ivory lines, the edges bold and saw-toothed so the figure reads clearly against the ground. Inside the diamond, smaller nested lozenges appear, linked by short bars; the fills shift between tan and pale peach, with tiny accents of light blue that cool the center like little lights.
Above and below the diamond, two smaller anchors echo the geometry: compact stepped forms in ivory with tan and peach infill, each ending in a neat point aimed to the ends of the rug. Around the medallion’s waist sit squared floral knots—stylized blossoms that keep to the same palette: ivory outlines, tan and peach petals, and pin dots of light blue. The drawing is bilateral; if you fold the rug down its center, left answers right, top answers bottom.
The field remains largely brown, intentionally open so the medallion can breathe, but faint tracks of tan abrash run in the pile like horizontal whispers—variation that stays muted and calm. Where the field meets the frame, small stepped corner spurs in ivory nibble into the brown, tightening the transition with crisp angles.
The borders build outward in layers. Closest to the field is a slim ivory track that snaps the edge clean. Beyond it spreads a wider band where little treelike rosettes repeat: each rosette a circle of tiny squares drawn in ivory with short stems in brown, and occasional petals shaded pink or peach so the chain warms and cools as it travels. Outside that, another guard in tan and brown carries a simple march of stepped motifs, and the far edge resolves into a quiet ivory rim before the fringe begins. The borders are balanced—strong enough to contain the dark center but never heavy—so the eye always returns to the diamond.
Color changes are abrupt and readable: ivory against brown cuts like light against shadow; tan softens edges; peach brings a small glow; pink appears in brief blushes inside a blossom; and light blue adds tiny, cool pauses. Under the hand the surface is even, with no hills; the edge finishing feels clean and tight. From across a room, the rug reads as a deep brown panel ruled by a pale ivory diamond; up close, the viewer discovers the stepped geometry, the tiled rosettes, and the restrained orchestra of tan, peach, pink, and light blue that make this traditional Zanjan feel composed, calm, and beautifully exact.
