A small rectangular wool rug from Iran in the Mahal tradition, its surface bright and full, carried by an all-over vine field. The ground is red, not a flat slab but gently breathing with the wool’s nap; the color reads warm and steady beneath the pattern. Across it, a branching network of curling stems flows in ivory, the lines smooth and continuous, bending and looping so the eye never hits a hard stop. At the tips of these stems blossom rounded rosettes and leaf shapes. Many flowers open in light blue with navy blue outlines, others in green with small ivory hearts, and some petals are shaded by touches of brown that settle the brightness. Everywhere the vines cross, little buds sprinkle the field, giving it a lively, gardenlike pulse while the layout stays bilateral—motifs on the left echo those on the right.
The borders rise in layers. Closest to the field runs a slim red inner line that holds the vines in place. Beyond it, a wide ivory band carries a steady procession of small, repeat rosettes: each unit a tiny diamond-rosette drawn in navy blue, red, green, and light blue, spaced evenly so the rhythm never breaks. Outside this, another framing stripe in red returns, and the farthest edge resolves into a dark navy blue rim that reads like a firm shadow around the whole carpet. At every corner the turns are crisp; the repeat continues without confusion, which gives the frame a clean, confident geometry.
Under the hand the pile feels medium in height and even, with no sudden rises; the surface glides in one direction and catches light in the other. The outlines remain sharp where ivory meets red and where navy blue sets the edge of a petal; transitions between shades are smooth, so forms look rounded rather than cut. From a distance the rug reads as a red garden calmly enclosed by ivory and navy borders; as you approach, you discover the soft alternation of light blue and green flowers, the gentle grounding of brown, and the constant movement of the vine scrolls that stitch the field into a single, flowing picture—transitional in spirit, floral in language, and unmistakably Persian in poise.
