Turkmen rugs are named after the Turkmen tribes of North and North-East Iran who, according to experts, began weaving carpets as early as the 6th century B.C. These rugs were purposely made in small and medium sizes as the tribes lived a nomadic lifestyle. Large Turkmen rugs were rarely made and those that exist are hard to find. Turkmen rugs often have a red field with ‘Gul’ patterns that are described as rose-like details.
