Khotan was once an ancient Iranian Saka Buddihist kingdom built on an oasis along the famous Silk Road of Central Asia. Having easy access to silk and other rug materials passing through the city, it’s no surprise Khotan became an important rug production center. The rugs produced here were mostly made from silk or combined with wool. What made the Khotan carpets remarkable were the fusion of Persian and Chinese influences on the rug patterns used which made them very distinct.
