Tabriz is the capital city of East Azerbaijan Province, Iran which is close to the border of Turkey. It has earned the reputation of producing some of the finest rugs in the world, particularly those commissioned by the great Shah Abbas during the 15th and 16th centuries. Tabriz even gained more prominence in the 19th century when famous carpet makers Haji Jalili, Kurban Dai, and Sheik Safi produced exceptional designs that graced royal courts as well as the homes of the rich and famous.
Tabriz rug designs are often characterized by intricate floral patterns woven in a grand scale; a style obviously tailor-made for palaces and mansions. The color palette often used by weavers are rich and deep such as red, navy blue and black mixed with gray and ivory – hues denoting class and elegance.
