Afshar rugs are named after a nomadic tribe that populated most of the border regions of ancient Persia. While classified as a Persian rug, it’s worth noting that the rug designs have an uncanny resemblance to Caucasian rugs particularly Shirvan weaving. Experts and historians point to the tribe’s Turkish dialect that could mean they have Turkish or Azerbaijan roots. Nonetheless, Afshar rugs are among the most desirable especially with their dwindling numbers available in the market.
