Heriz Rugs are enticing and durable rugs that traces its roots in Heris, East Azerbaijan in Iran. Aside from its durability, another feature that makes this rug coveted is its vibrant and bold colors that bring warmth into everyone’s home. The demand for antique Heriz Rugs has increased in the past decade to the point where its finer and older antique pieces are considered rare and its value has increased.

Durability in Beauty

Handmade products may have good quality, but Heriz Rugs have ramped up the scene with its pieces that would last for generations. One secret behind this is its location. Mount Sabalan, the place where these rugs are produced, has a major deposit of copper. Because of this, sheep would have traces of copper in their drinking water thus producing high-quality wool.

Aside from this, the secret behind the resiliency of a Heriz carpet is found in its knot density. It ranges from 30 to 110 knots per square inch depending on the piece. Although, rugs that would look authentic and are above 100 knots per square inch are uncommon except for antique silk Heriz.

In terms of its design, a huge medallion with matching corner pieces consisting of angular oak leaves and foliage is the most prominent. Periodically, it may include designs such as flowers, leaves, or a Tree of Life motif. Also, antique Heriz rugs are more spacious compared to the ones made in the past 60 years.

Antique Heriz rugs are usually dyed in pure vegetable dyes which would mellow and get a nice sheen with age. Meanwhile, the latter ones, especially those made around 20 to 40 years ago are usually chemically dyed. In addition, the abrash technique or variation within one color and the double or triple outlining technique were done extremely well by the weavers.

Warmth that Passes Through Generations

Heriz rugs show that strength can be found in beauty as well as provide warmth to those who possess it. From its vibrant and striking colors, solid foundation, great craftsmanship, to its timeless beauty, it is something one should have in their home.
